Hmm, does that get rid of the horrible slow sliding/tab thing as well? That's how I got here - finding out how to remove it.

What is it with these animations? All they do is make all software feel slower, clunky and really ruin the `experience' (whatever that is supposed to mean, i don't `experience' my computer, i tell it what to do). I find it terribly annoying even on a 12 'core' intel cpu with nvidia gtx 480 card so it isn't the hardware. And it's getting hard to find all the hidden settings to remove them.

It made the original mac feel slow and clunky and it just makes the latest hardware feel slow and clunky. I really fail to see how sliding chunks of screen around whilst apparently not doing what the user asked for is in any way a good thing. I open hundreds of tabs a day, and never even look at the toolbar whilst they're opening, what a complete waste of effort.

Starting from Firefox 4 Beta 4, there's a boolean value in about:config called browser.tabs.animate

Toggling it to false will disable all tab animations.

I like the idea of the new tab growing vs just flashing instantly on, gives it a more smooth effect. Firefox 3.6.4 at least doesn't crash when a media plugins crash now.

Any chance this will be in the first Beta of Firefox 4? And it there a estimated date set for the beta release?

It looks really cool and in my opinion is a major missing feature form Firefox.
Because the average user will noticed three things when they 'try out a browser';
The speed, usability and how cool it looks. That's one thing Google's Chrome has over Firefox at the moment, but will change when Firefox 4 is released.

Just worry about the start up time, the rest will follow. If the start up time is not as fast or faster than Chromes is then I think that Chrome will dominate the browser competition rather fast.
