New Toolbar Buttons on Various Backgrounds

New Toolbar Buttons on Various Backgrounds
Initially designed for variable backgrounds on Glass but pleased with their melding abilities in other situations.

High Contrast
Probably need a special high contrast set.

Very nice! Thanks for thinking about the backgrounds and even the high contrast, the thought put into it is what makes Firefox so great!

Monochromatic icons and bordered buttons? The old is new again!

could the persona (in the glass theme) be a little transparent? Like 90% as default, and somewhere a setting (or addon) to change the level of transparency?

IMHO, the new buttons are boring, lacking personality. Maybe they will go well with the Firefox 4 theme, but on 3.x branch they don’t cut it. Hopefully the default 3.6 Strata theme is compatible with the 3.7 when it comes out.

Also, more though should be put into giving the buttons same visual weight. Some of them are very thin (e.g. the Reload button) and some very thick (home, bookmarks, new tab button).

  5. @jr: I don’t see any likeness…

IMO i really dont like the new buttons for 4.0 Please re-consider this mess. Or atleast bring back the first 4.0 theme. Or make an add-on / theme for it.

    Thanks

Need to get rid of transparent inactive tabs… Looks really bad, especially on dark backgrounds, and all inactive tabs are hard to read.

  10. Stephen says:

@Kurt: Once more bits land (like the new tab style) we will be able to tweak it to look nice on glass.

  11. Kurt says:

Thanks Stephen for clearing that up. I was worried the mock-up images on the wiki page were pretty much final for the tabs. I love how you have tabs on top, just kind of annoying how their transparent, as they are hard to read on dark backgrounds / busy backgrounds. Hopefully you guys do something in terms of the Google Chrome tab look with the inactive tabs (not having them transparent).

    Keep up the good work!

I note that the “stop” button is an engraved X on a red background in the new combined buttons (or just an X engraved on the regular toolbar). This may be consistent with other browsers but it is not logical nor consistent with the common convention for ‘stop’. An ‘X’ in computing usually means ‘close’ or ‘delete’, but for it to also mean ‘stop’ is not logical! Firefox had it right in version 2 – surely the stop button should be an octagon engraved in the red background!!

Here are some of my alternative proposals (I didn’t use your guidelines here so they would obviously need cleaned up!):

I think I prefer the one that is the same as the FF2 STOP icon.
